浄興寺は浄土真宗の宗祖親鸞聖人によって創設されました。聖人は今の茨城県笠間市稲田町に稲田禅坊を開かれました。聖人は民衆に布教されるとともに、自己の信仰を深められ、真宗の根本聖典である教行信証を著されました。そのお喜びのお気持ちを山号･寺号に顕され、この禅坊を歓喜踊躍山浄土真宗興行寺、略して浄興寺と名づけられました。
