甘州区地处河西走廊中部、古丝绸之路南北两线和“居延古道”交汇点上，南依祁连山、北靠合黎山，历来为河西走廊重镇，兵家必争、商旅必经之地。甘州历史悠久，人文荟萃，据文字记载，已有五千年历史。夏商至春秋战国时期，为羌、戎、狄等少数民族居住地；汉元鼎六年，汉武帝取“张国臂掖，以通西域”之义设置张掖郡；西魏恭帝元年，因甘泉清冽改名为甘州；至元18年，元世祖忽必烈在甘州设甘肃行中书省，乃为甘肃建省之始，也是甘肃省命名的由来；甘州水源富足、物产丰富，素有“塞上江南”、“湿地之城”之美誉。
